For years Steph and I have been aware that nutrition practitioners make up a sizeable percentage of the Fueling Endurance audience.
So for those working with athletes, I'm super excited to launch the Fueling Endurance Practitioner Membership. The membership provides access to a suite of tools and resources that will help you help your clients. Over the past 20 years I've created and used a variety of spreadsheets, calculators, race planners and other tools in my practice, and I've now built these into web-based resources that you can subscribe to. The resources guide you step-by-step, from calculating fluid and sodium replacement needs for any event, to troubleshooting gut issues or cramping with your athletes, and much more.
The Fueling Endurance Practitioner Membership is a bit of a mash-up of a Patreon and a software subscription.
You'll have access to all the tools needed to help refine your nutrition planning for endurance athletes, integrating the latest evidence to provide clear race nutrition plans, troubleshoot common problems your clients face, and much more
An example of one of the online tools available - in this case, the tool calculates energy expenditure and carbohydrate and fat oxidation for running or cycling.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The membership includes the following tools:
-
Daily energy & macronutrients calculator: Enter athlete details and an overview of a day or week's training (swim, run (road/rail), ride and gym), and the calculator will provide suggested energy and macro requirements.
-
Calorie & substrate oxidation calculator: Enter a race or training session details (running or cycling) and get estimates of in-session calorie expenditure, carbohydrate and fat oxidation.
-
Fluid & sodium requirement calculator: Enter exercise duration, expected sweat rate (links to an online estimation calculator), desired body mass loss (%), and estimated sweat sodium concentration. You'll get fluid intake requirements (mL/hr) and sodium requirements (mg/hr) for maintaining the desired hydration status, with a stable blood sodium concentration.
-
Race nutrition planner: Enter event duration, then choose drink mixes, gels, bars and other foods to get a calculation of carb, fluid, sodium, caffeine intakes (total and per hour), plus glucose and fructose amounts and ratio. Includes a database of products to search for nutritional composition.
-
Cramping assessment tool: Uses a recently published tool to identify an athlete's individual risk factors for cramping during exercise.
-
Gut issues assessment tool: A checklist/qeustionnaire to help identify potential risk factors contributing to an athlete's gut issues during exercise. This can be useful in scenarios where a proper gut assessment during exercise is not possible.
Are these tools accessible on a mobile device, or only desktop/laptop?
These tools are designed for practitioners working on their laptop or desktop computer. This allows you to view complicated tools and calculators, or multiple hypothetical scenarios, side-by-side. They can be used on a full-sized iPad in landscape mode, but are not designed for use on phones. Why? Because the endless scrolling and the fiddling around to use the tools would be enormously frustrating.
There are plans for some pared-back, simpler tools to be built in a way that's phone-friendly for practitioners working in the field, for things like calculating sweat losses from adjusted pre/post session weight, and post-exercise rehydration targets. Check back here for updates when these are available
What units (metric or imperial) do the tools use?
At this stage only metric units are available (i.e. g, mL, kg and L), but there are plans to incorporate pounds (lb) and fluid ounces (fl oz) into future updates.
Is there help to understand how to use these tools?
Yes, throughout the tools there are information popups that help explain how the tools are working, what's required in terms of data entry, and how to interpret the output of the tools.
Can I set up client accounts and save my calculations for my athletes?
No, these tools are not intended to replace your existing practice management software used for bookings, documentation, etc, or to replace your dietary analysis package. Building a system that captures and stores personal information dramatically increases the data storage and cybersecurity requirements, which would result in a much more expensive product for you. No one wants to pay the cost of 2 client management systems.
Instead, each calculator has the ability to generate a PDF capture of your calculations, so you can save them for later if required.
How much does the membership cost?
AUS $22 per month, or $220 per year.
There's a particular tool I'd really love, but it's not included. Can you build it?
Possibly. Please reach out with your suggestions for any new tools, calculators, resources, or suggested improvements for the existing ones.
